August 2026 Mail Swap: Around the World in Mail
One of the loveliest things about snail mail is the way it lets us see a little piece of someone else’s world.
A letter can carry the feel of a place with it.
The birds outside someone’s window. The café they always stop at. The flowers blooming along their favourite walking trail. The food their town is known for. The small landmarks, routines and familiar corners that make somewhere feel like home.
For August’s Enchanted Postmark mail exchange, we celebrated exactly that with Around the World in Mail.
This free snail mail swap invited letter writers to share a glimpse of where they live and send a little piece of their everyday world to someone new.
August’s Theme: Around the World in Mail
You don’t need to live somewhere famous or far away to have something interesting to share. Every place has its own rhythm, landscape, traditions and little details that someone elsewhere may never have experienced. For this exchange, participants were encouraged to think about the place they call home and write about the things that make it feel distinctively theirs.
Maybe that meant describing the coastline, mountains or streets nearby.
Maybe it was a favourite local shop.
Perhaps it was the sound of certain birds in the morning, a summer tradition, a hidden walking trail, or a place that visitors might never think to look for.
The idea was simple:
Share a little of your world through the mail.
What Could You Write About?
If you were taking part in the August exchange, there were plenty of ways to interpret the theme.
You could write about:
The town, city or community where you live
A favourite place to walk
Local birds, wildlife or plants
A nearby beach, park, trail or landmark
A favourite independent shop or café
A local tradition or seasonal event
Food your area is known for
Somewhere visitors might not know about
What summer looks and feels like where you live
A place that makes you feel especially at home
Something small you’ve been enjoying in your everyday surroundings
Your letter didn’t need to read like a travel guide.
The most interesting details are often the personal ones.
A place can become memorable simply because someone tells you why it matters to them.
What to Send
The heart of the August exchange was one handwritten letter.
That was all that was required.
Participants could also include a small, flat surprise if they wished, such as:
A bookmark
A favourite recipe
A tea bag
A small map clipping
A drawing
A postcard
A little piece of paper ephemera
Extras were completely optional.
The important part was taking the time to write something thoughtful and send it to another person through the post.
How the August Mail Swap Worked
The Enchanted Postmark monthly mail swaps are free to join and open to anyone who enjoys sending handwritten correspondence.
Registration for the August exchange closed on August 15, 2026.
After registration ended, participants were matched with another letter writer and received their partner’s details by email.
Letters were then asked to be mailed by August 25, 2026.
From there, envelopes began travelling between towns, cities, provinces, states and countries—each carrying a small glimpse of somewhere else.
Why Share Where You Live?
There’s something quietly fascinating about seeing an ordinary place through someone else’s eyes.
The street you walk every day might be completely unfamiliar to someone hundreds of kilometres away.
The birds you hardly notice because they’re always nearby might be birds your partner has never seen.
Your local weather, your favourite corner shop, the view from your neighbourhood or the way summer feels where you live may all be new to the person receiving your letter.
That’s part of what makes snail mail such a wonderful way to connect.
It turns everyday details into something worth noticing.
And it reminds us that even though our surroundings may be very different, we often find comfort and joy in similar things.
A Little Piece of Home in an Envelope
August’s exchange was especially fitting alongside the month’s Atlantic Puffin collection.
Puffins travel across vast stretches of open ocean, yet return again to familiar places.
That idea of movement, belonging and finding your way home felt like a natural companion to a mail exchange about sharing the places that shape us.
A handwritten letter can do something similar.
It can travel far while still carrying a strong sense of where it came from.
A few sheets of paper can hold a landscape, a memory, a favourite place and a little bit of home.

The August Around the World in Mail exchange has now closed, but a new Enchanted Postmark mail swap begins each month.
Each exchange has a different theme designed to make starting a letter a little easier and to encourage more thoughtful, handwritten mail to find its way into the world.
The swaps are free to join, and you don’t need to be an Enchanted Postmark subscriber to take part.
