Inside the September Goldfinch Snail Mail Dispatch: Turning the Page

September has always carried the feeling of a new beginning.

Perhaps it comes from all those years of freshly sharpened pencils, empty notebooks, new classrooms, and the quiet anticipation of wondering what the months ahead might hold.

Even long after our school days are behind us, there is something about September that still feels like an invitation to turn the page.

Summer hasn’t quite disappeared. There are still warm afternoons, flowers blooming, and golden light stretching across the end of the day. But the mornings are cooler, the evenings arrive a little earlier, and small signs of the changing season are beginning to appear everywhere.

And among all that late-summer gold is September’s featured bird: the American Goldfinch.

This month’s Enchanted Postmark envelopes travelled from Nova Scotia to mailboxes near and far carrying bright yellow feathers, a little stationery secret, and an invitation to embrace the possibility of beginning again.

The September Theme: Turning the Page

There is something reassuring about knowing we don’t have to wait until January to begin again.

A fresh start can happen quietly.

It can be opening a notebook to a blank page.

Writing the first letter to a new pen pal.

Picking up a hobby you haven’t made time for lately.

Sending a postcard to someone you’ve been thinking about.

Or simply noticing that a new season is arriving and allowing yourself to move into it a little differently.

September’s collection was inspired by those small beginnings—the ones that don’t require grand resolutions or dramatic changes.

Sometimes all we need is a blank piece of paper and somewhere to begin.

Meet the American Goldfinch

Few birds capture the colours of late summer quite like the American Goldfinch.

With its brilliant yellow feathers, little black cap, and cheerful presence among fields and gardens, a Goldfinch can look almost like a tiny piece of sunshine suddenly taking flight.

But Goldfinches are also a lovely reminder that nothing in nature stays exactly the same.

As the seasons change, their appearance changes too. Those brilliant summer colours gradually soften as autumn approaches, making them a particularly fitting bird for a month that sits between two seasons.

For the September collection, I wanted to capture that feeling of lingering summer warmth while also acknowledging the quiet changes already beginning around us.

Inside the September Goldfinch Snail Mail Collection

Each Enchanted Postmark dispatch is created as a small collection of coordinating pieces rather than simply an envelope filled with stationery.

The artwork, postcards, letter, and paper surprises all begin with one bird and one idea, slowly becoming a little story that can travel through the mail.

An Original 5 × 7 American Goldfinch Art Print

At the centre of September’s collection is an original American Goldfinch art print inspired by the golden colours of late summer.

It can be framed or displayed on a shelf, tucked into a journal, added to a gallery wall, or kept with the other monthly bird prints as your Enchanted Postmark collection grows.

I love the idea of each little print becoming a reminder of the month in which it arrived—a paper record of the changing seasons, one bird at a time.

Two Original Goldfinch Postcards

September also included two original Goldfinch postcards created especially for this month’s dispatch. You can keep them, collect them, use them in a journal—or do what postcards were made to do and send them travelling. Perhaps one could go to an old friend you haven’t spoken with recently. The other might become the beginning of a new correspondence.

There doesn’t need to be an occasion to send someone a postcard. Sometimes I saw this and thought of you is more than enough reason.

The September Letter

Every monthly dispatch includes a letter from me, and September’s letter explored that familiar feeling of a new beginning.

I wrote about freshly sharpened pencils, stacks of new books, the changing September light, and that strange little echo of back-to-school season that seems to follow many of us into adulthood.
