Inside the August Puffin Snail Mail Dispatch: Finding Your Way Home

There is something wonderfully fitting about a puffin finding its way back to the same rocky shores, year after year. No matter how far it travels across the open ocean, it always returns to the same shore.

The August Enchanted Postmark snail mail collection was inspired by that feeling of return—and by the people and places we discover along the way that somehow begin to feel like home.

This month’s envelopes travelled from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to mailboxes near and far, carrying an Atlantic Puffin, a little piece of the coast, and an invitation to think about what home really means.

The August Theme: Finding People and Places That Feel Like Home

Home isn't always an address.

Sometimes it's a kitchen table where you've had a hundred conversations. A familiar path through the woods. A favourite corner of a library. A city you visited once and inexplicably felt you belonged in.

And sometimes, home is a person.

It can be someone who makes it easy to be yourself. Someone who understands the stories you've told a dozen times and still wants to hear them again. Someone whose handwriting on an envelope makes you smile before you've even opened it.

The August Enchanted Postmark collection celebrates those connections—the people and places that give us the feeling that we've landed somewhere safe, familiar, and entirely our own.

And for that theme, there could hardly be a better little ambassador than the Atlantic Puffin.

Meet the Atlantic Puffin

Few birds feel quite as connected to the Atlantic coast as the puffin.

With their colourful bills, bright orange feet, and wonderfully expressive faces, Atlantic Puffins spend much of their lives at sea before returning to land to nest.

Here in Atlantic Canada, they feel especially at home among rocky islands, cold ocean water, sea breezes, and dramatic coastal skies.

For the August collection, I wanted to capture some of that magic—the feeling of standing near the edge of the Atlantic as the day begins to soften, watching the horizon and wondering where all those little birds have travelled before finding their way back.

Each Enchanted Postmark dispatch is designed as a small collection rather than simply an envelope of stationery.

The pieces are created around a shared bird, story, and theme.

The centrepiece of this month's collection features the Atlantic Puffin surrounded by the colours of a late summer sunset. Display it on a desk, tuck it into a journal, add it to a gallery wall, or simply keep it somewhere that reminds you of the sea.

The unique postcards were created especially for the August collection and are perfect for sending a little unexpected happy mail to someone who feels like home.

The August letter

Every monthly dispatch includes a letter from me.

It's one of my favourite parts of Enchanted Postmark because the club was never meant to be only about beautiful paper. It's also about rediscovering the slower, more personal experience of receiving something another human took the time to send.

This month's letter explored our August theme and included a few prompts for reflecting on the people, places, and memories that give us a sense of belonging.

And, of course, there were a few extra treasures tucked inside. I love adding small paper surprises to each month's envelope—the kind of things you can use in your journal, add to your correspondence, tuck into another letter, or simply save in your stationery collection.

They're part of what makes each monthly dispatch a little different from the one before it.

Who Feels Like Home to You?

Maybe there is someone you haven't written to in a while.

A childhood friend. A sibling. A former neighbour. A pen pal on the other side of the world. Someone you met recently who somehow feels as though you've known them much longer.

Consider this your little nudge to write to them.

You don't need a special occasion.

You don't need beautiful handwriting.

You don't even need very much to say.

Sometimes a simple I was thinking about you today is enough.

Because perhaps one of the loveliest things we can do for another person is remind them that, somewhere in this enormous world, there is someone who is happy they are in it.

Coming Next: The September Goldfinch Dispatch

As the puffins make their way into mailboxes, I'm already working on September.

Next month's featured bird is the American Goldfinch, bringing its cheerful yellow feathers to Enchanted Postmark just as summer begins its slow transition toward autumn.
