October 2026 Mail Swap: Legends, Lore & Letters
There is something about October that seems made for stories.
The evenings arrive a little earlier. Leaves gather along quiet paths. The air turns cool enough for sweaters, warm drinks and afternoons spent indoors with paper and pen. And overhead, you might hear the unmistakable call of a raven.
With their intelligence, curiosity and long connection to stories, mythology and folklore, ravens feel perfectly suited to this month's Enchanted Postmark mail exchange.
For October, we're letting stories travel through the post with Legends, Lore & Letters—a free snail mail exchange inspired by local legends, old stories, curious traditions and the tales connected to the places we call home.
October's Theme: Legends, Lore & Letters
Every place has stories. Some have been told for hundreds of years. Others might be little pieces of family lore, unusual local traditions or stories you've heard so many times that you aren't entirely sure where the truth ends and the legend begins. For this month's exchange, you'll be matched with another letter writer and invited to send them a handwritten letter containing a story from your corner of the world.
It doesn't need to be frightening or supernatural. Your story might be mysterious, funny, beautiful, historical, strange or simply something you think deserves to keep being told.
Consider it a little piece of your world tucked inside an envelope and sent somewhere new.
What Could You Write About?
If you're not sure where to begin, think about the stories that surround the places, people and landscapes you know.
You could share:
A local legend or piece of folklore
The story behind an unusual landmark
A tale connected to a historical building or place
A superstition you've heard throughout your life
A story involving birds, animals or the natural world
A family story that has been passed down through generations
A curious mystery from your town or region
A favourite myth, legend or folktale
An old tradition from where you live
A story that you've always loved hearing
You don't need to research an elaborate historical tale unless you want to. Even a simple story about something unusual in your community can make fascinating mail for someone living hundreds—or thousands—of kilometres away.
If you're sharing a story from a particular culture, community or tradition, please include a little context about where it comes from and share it respectfully.
What to Send
The heart of the exchange is one handwritten letter inspired by the October theme.
Your letter can be as simple or elaborate as you'd like.
You can also tuck in a small, flat paper surprise if you'd like to add something extra. Perhaps:
A postcard from your area
A small illustration
A piece of interesting paper ephemera
A postage stamp
A tiny printed version of the legend you shared
A handmade paper piece
Extras are completely optional. A thoughtful handwritten letter is more than enough.
How the October Mail Swap Works
The Enchanted Postmark monthly swaps are free to join and open to anyone who enjoys sending real mail.
When registration closes, you'll be randomly matched with one mail partner. You'll receive their name and mailing address by email shortly afterward. Then you'll create your October letter and send it on its way.
Your partner will be sending mail to someone too, so little stories will begin travelling from mailbox to mailbox, crossing towns, provinces, states and perhaps even oceans.

A Little October Storytelling Through the Mail
Long before stories lived on screens, they travelled from person to person. They were spoken beside fires, written into books, tucked into diaries and passed along in letters. Perhaps that's part of what makes sharing a story through the mail feel especially fitting.
Someone sits down with a piece of paper.
They choose a story.
They write it by hand.
They fold the pages, tuck them into an envelope, add a stamp and send them out into the world.
A few days or weeks later, that story arrives in the hands of someone who may live somewhere completely different. For a little while, something from your corner of the world has become part of theirs. That's the kind of quiet connection these monthly exchanges are meant to create.
